Nye Reaches Historic Mark In Season-Opening Win

MIDDLETOWN, Pa.Sydney Nye made history in helping lead Penn State Harrisburg women's tennis to a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Susquehanna in each team's season opener at the Hoverter Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon, March 23.

With her convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory over Hannah Maykut in the No. 2 singles contest, Nye tied former women's tennis player Theodora Avramidis for the most solo victories in a career with 26. She also paired up with teammate Rachael Lim to defeat SU's Ashlynn Searer and Grace Tepes 8-4 in the top doubles matchup.

Freshman Olivia Hitz joined sophomore Gabrielle Sabatose in grinding out an 8-7 (7-3) doubles victory over Maykut and Christina Rudderow that proved valuable in Penn State Harrisburg's narrow overall team win.

In addition to Nye's solo victory, Hitz and Sabatose each came away with singles wins, with Hitz topping Tepes 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 3 matchup and Sabatose working hard for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 decision against Chelsea Kneedler in the No. 4 contest.

The Lions return to action when they host Clarks Summit for another non-conference match on Friday afternoon, April 9.
