Women's Tennis Captures First Conference Victory

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg's women's tennis team picked up its first conference victory of the spring when the team defeated Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) foe St. Mary's (Md.) 7-2 at the Hoverter Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon, April 6.

 

The Lions (6-10, 1-4 CAC) set the tone early with a sweep of doubles action. In the top outing, Sydney Nye an Elyse Mellott worked hard for an 8-6 win over SMC's Claire Bodine and Alden Grosh. Maria Torre and Soorya Chitibabu cruised to an 8-2 victory over Marianne Hershey and Jackie Agyemang in the second contest. In No. 3 play, Courtney Bennett and Abigail Clifford rolled to an 8-1 decision over Sophie Nuwar and Baudratte Djiogo.

 

Nye's victory in the No. 1 singles spot was hard earned, as Penn State Harrisburg's top player shrugged off a second-set loss before coming back to win a third-set superbreaker and clinch a 7-6, 5-7, 10-7 win over Bodine. Claire Hackenberg made quick work of her No. 4 outing, sweeping Nuwar 6-0, 6-0, while Chitiibabu went 6-3, 6-3 over Agyemang in the fifth matchup. Bennett took care of business in the No. 6 slot, earning a 6-1, 6-0 win over Djiogo.

 

The Blue & White return to action when they host Frostburg State for their penultimate CAC match o the spring at the Hoverter Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon, April 13.
