Avramidis Wins Twice; Women Fall In Season-Opener

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg's 2013-14 season is officially underway.  Unfortunately for the ladies, their campaign began with a 6-3 road loss to Immaculata on Wednesday evening, Sep. 25.

The Lions lone doubles victory came courtesy of the top team in senior Theodora Avramidis (Vernon, N.J. / Vernon Township) and junior Stephanie Harnden (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey).  The Blue & White number two pair of freshmen Jasmine Brawner (Waldorf, Md. / Westlake) and Laura Lin (Palmyra, Pa. / Susquehanna Township) fell to Immaculata's Kara Trowbridge and Theresa Martini 8-2.  Penn State Harrisburg's number three duo of sophomore Mandy Herr (Manheim, Pa. / Manheim Central) and senior Alejandra Portillo (Palmyra, Pa. / Palmyra Area) dropped their match to the home team's Julie Einwechter and Pattie McGinley by an 8-2 margin.

Avramidis also picked up a singles victory over Immaculata's Nicole Burley in the number two slot 6-4, 7-5 while Lin took care of the Mighty Macs' number six player Olivia Kauffman 6-4, 6-4.  In the end, however, it wasn't enough as Harnden fell to Degnan, Portillo dropped her match to Trowbridge, Brawner was bested by the home team's Anna Kambouroglos and Herr fell to Martini.

The Lions' season-opener didn't play out the way they would have liked but the ladies will have over a week to fine tune their game before the team's home-opener next week.  Penn State Harrisburg next takes the court when Baptist Bible (Pa.) pays a visit to the Hoverter Tennis Complex next Friday, Oct. 4.
