Women's Soccer Edged at Berks In Regular Season Finale

READING, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's women's soccer team was edged 2-1 by United East rival Penn State Berks in the regular season finale with major postseason implications on Tuesday night, Oct. 24.  

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

Penn State Harrisburg (9-4-4, 4-1-1 United East) scored early but couldn't make the lead stick in a narrow road loss to Penn State Berks (8-8-1, 4-1-1 United East) on Tuesday night. 

 

The visiting Lions got on the board first less than five minutes into the contest when Hannah Wheeler deflected home a Kylee Altland corner kick insertion just 4:41 after the opening kickoff. 

 

The home team responded 20 minutes later when Ashley Jocham took advantage of a turnover and put her attempt into the far left corner of the net to tie things up heading into halftime.

 

Things remained in a stalemate until late in the contest when Carly Fox put Penn State Berks ahead with a goal in the 72nd minute. Penn State Harrisburg got off two more shots and earned a corner kick in the final 17 minutes but the visitors were unable to find an equalizer down the stretch.

 

NOTABLES

- The evenly-matched game saw Penn State Harrisburg outshoot Penn State Berks 9-to-8 overall, while the home team outshot the visitors 5-to-4 in shots on target.

- Penn State Harrisburg earned seven corner kicks. Penn State Berks had five.

- Wheeler's goal was her second marker of the season.

- Altland's helper was her team-leading ninth assist of the year. 

 

WHO'S NEXT?

The Lions secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming United East Championship Tournament and will host a playoff game next week. An opponent has yet to be determined for their first postseason contest on Tuesday night, Oct. 31.
