Women's Soccer Battles to Second Consecutive Draw

ONEONTA, N.Y. – For the second consecutive game, Penn State Harrisburg's women's soccer team battled on the defensive end and earned a hard-fought draw, going on the road and tying Hartwick 1-1 on the opening day of the Mayor's Cup on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 11.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Despite being outshot by a wide margin, Penn State Harrisburg made its chances count against Hartwick on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions (0-1-2) wasted little time getting into the scoring act and struck first in the 11th minute when Rhyan Socash corralled a ball from Sarah Calkins, broke away from all Hartwick defenders and fired a shot past goalkeeper Sara Staup and into the back of the net to make it 1-0 at the 33:47 mark of the first half.

The Blue & White held the slim advantage until late in the first half when the hometown Hawks (2-0-2) finally broke through and netted the equalizer in the 39th minute. Madi McGuire converted her attempt off an assist from Gianna Cacciola with 5:24 left before the break.

In the second half, Hartwick got off eight shots, compared to just one by Penn State Harrisburg. The Blue & White held strong on defense however, and Delaney Shifflet did her job in goal, making a pair of saves to keep things knotted up and send the game to overtime.

The Lions were unable to get off a good look in either of the two overtime periods but Shifflett continued her strong play, making two saves in each of the extra sessions to clinch the tie for the visitors.
