Ladies Advance to NEAC Semis With Shootout Victory

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - The Penn State Harrisburg Lady Lions hosted the Cazenovia Wildcats in the first round of the NEAC tournament on Tuesday, November 2, 2010. The evenly matched game ended in dramatic fashion as the Lady Lions advanced with a win in the shootout.

The Lady Lions breezed by the Wildcats 5-0 in their first meeting, but the Wildcats came out with a stronger performance for the post season game. Just nine minutes into the game, Adrienne Stine (York, PA/Northeastern ) notched her ninth goal of the season after receiving a penalty kick for a Cazenovia foul. Minutes later, Cazenovia forward Liz Steinmetz drew Lady Lion goalkeeper Brittany Adams (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York) out of the goal and recorded a goal of her own to tie up the game. The Lady Lions took 29 shots on goal but couldn't find the net again forcing the game into overtime and double overtime. Neither team was able to score so a shootout commenced to determine which team would advance to the NEAC semi-finals.

As per NCAA rules, each team was given five penalty shots on goal. After the first five were taken by each team, a winner still had yet to be determined as both teams scored four out of the five shots. The teams then alternated taking one shot on goal until a winner was decided. Adams blocked the final two Cazenovia attempts and Megan Frailey (Middletown, PA/Middletown) hit the game winning penalty shot to advance the Lady Lions.

The Lady Lions will travel to SUNY IT for the NEAC Semi-Finals. They will face host, SUNY IT, on Saturday, November 6, 2010 at 8:30AM.
