Men's Tennis Edges Abington to Remain Unbeaten In Conference

ABINGTON, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's men's tennis team won a 5-4 thriller at Penn State Abington on Monday afternoon to remain undefeated in United East play. 

 

Clayton Herb was the difference maker in the pivotal conference win, as his 6-2, 6-3 victory over Adrian Schembri in the No. 6 singles matchup proved the deciding factor. Vic Patel pulled the visiting Lions even with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Nick Talarico in the fifth contest after his team fell behind 4-3 in solo action. 

 

Damir Cuturic and Andrew Schreck were also victorious in their singles matches, with the former going over Josh Kurek 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 contest and the latter taking care of Neil Guarino 6-0, 6-2 in the third showdown. Cooper Wheeler dropped a three-set marathon to Wenxu Gu in the top solo matchup, while Derwin Merca was tripped up by Tripp Mangifesta in the No. 4 pairing.

 

Cooper and Cuturic secured the first win of the day for Penn State Harrisburg with an 8-4 decision in the top doubles outing but the teams of Schreck and Patel, along with Merca and Herb were edged in tiebreakers in the second and third doubles contests, respectively.

 

The Lions (9-5, 4-0 United East) travel to St. Mary's (Md.) for a pivotal conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon.
