Harrisburg Golf Fails To Three Peat; Hands Over Crown to Rutgers-Camden

Middletown Pa. - The Penn State Harrisburg golf team was unable to hold off Rutgers- Camden today in the final round of the NEAC Conference Championship Tournament.  Even with Matt Plummer (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Jason Long (Rockhill Furnace, Pa./Southern Huntingdon County) finishing tied for 2nd place overall, they will have to settle for a team second place trophy this year.

The Lions knew that they had their work cut out for themselves in today's final round of the NEAC Conference Championships.  The Scarlet Raptors started the final 18 holes with a nine stroke lead.  This was largely due to the -3, 69 score shot by the eventual tournament overall champion Quentin Griffith IV from Rutgers turned in on Friday.

After the first nine Harrisburg had picked up a few strokes and was feeling in contention thanks to Jason Long and Matt Plummer who both had gained strokes on their Rutgers counterparts.  Things stayed tight until the end, but as the players started to reach the club house to turn in their scorecards, Harrisburg hopes were starting to dwindle.

Many of the lion men, despite playing well, all seemed to just miss a putt or chip shot every time they were ready to really start to close the gap.  Chris Murphy (Harrisburg, Pa. / Susquehanna Township), Matt Rowe (Lebanon, Pa./Elco), and Tyler Gentzler (Milroy, Pa./Mifflin County)  finished with the same output from the day before, but Rutgers Camden's kept pace to avoid giving up too much of their lead.  In the end, Harrisburg finished in second place with a 624 between the two rounds of play, taking the top four finishers into account.

The Scarlet Raptors earned their third NEAC Title with their 618 total and will now get ready to head to Florida for the D3 National Tournament later in May.
