Women's Tennis Captures Volt Division Championship

HERSHEY, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's women's tennis team defeated conference rival St. Mary's (Md.) 5-0 at the Hershey Racquet Club on Saturday afternoon to capture the United East Volt Division Championship and clinch a spot in next weekend's conference title match. 

 

The Lions (14-6) quickly swept through doubles play, starting with an 8-0 victory by Olivia Bandini and Sophia Bandini over Giselle Harris and Ellie Walter in the No. 2 matchup. The top contest saw Allison Wootton and Breanna DeSantis handle Cleopatra Solomon and Amber Manspeaker 8-1 before Sarah Shaub and Anita Liu bested Emily Shioutakon and Lauren Lovejoy 8-2 in the third outing. 

 

The Bandinis clinched the divisional title in solo action, as Sophia was the first Penn State Harrisburg player to earn a singles victory, topping Harris 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 4 outing before Olivia worked hard to seal the win with a 6-1, 6-4 decision against Manspeaker in the No. 2 showdown. 

 

Wootton led 7-5, 1-2 in the No. 1 solo outing, as did DeSantis 6-4, 3-3 in the third matchup. Liu was also leading 2-1 in the No. 5 contest when the match was decided. 

 

With the victory, Penn State Harrisburg will now face Cairn, the champion of the Skye Division, in the United East Championship Match at the Hershey Racquet Club on Saturday afternoon, May 4.
