Strong Defense Earns Penn State Harrisburg a Shutout Win

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - The Penn State Harrisburg women's soccer team has had a lot of success so far this season in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play but it has only kept the shutout for one other conference game in-spite of the seven wins.  Against the Cazenovia Wildcats on Saturday, Oct. 13, it was definitely an issue Lions' Head Coach Adam Clay was interested in improving on.  The blue and white ladies brought a mixed level of play and at times played the high caliber team game, passing and moving the ball from side to side creating chances and scoring goals.  While other times neglecting their team play and relying on individual talent and effort to help them toward their 6-0 win.

Nikki Francis (Pottstown, Pa. / Owen J. Roberts) got Penn State Harrisburg started in the first half, scoring the first and third goals of the day and bringing her total to eight this season.  Lyndsay Naughton (Reading, Pa. / Reading Central Catholic) also added multiple goals to the team tally today with her two second half scores giving her ten on the season.  Danell Engle (Halifax, Pa. / Halifax) and Rachel Shetler (Pequa, Pa. / Penn Manor) also each added a goal for the Lions in the match.

"I am always happy when we get rewarded with goals but today I was focused on the shutout, not the goals," said Clay after the game.

Mackenzie Gates (Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin) had to make a couple of big saves to make sure the Lions kept the zero on the scoreboard for the visitors.  The defensive effort was strong from the entire back four and will need to continue this trend as the blue and white get ready for the upcoming playoffs just weeks away.  The team only needs one more point out of their next four games to clinch a postseason berth.

"We won today but we need to remain focused on passing the ball and playing team soccer," said Clay.  "I have said this before and will say it again; teams win championships, not individuals."

Penn State Harrisburg hopes to clinch that all-important spot in the playoffs on Sunday when the ladies face off against Morrisville State at 12 p.m.
