Lions Leave Wildcats Out In Cold

MIDDLETOWN, Pa.- Penn State Harrisburg's women's soccer team welcomed SUNYIT to town on Sunday, Oct. 2, for a matchup of two North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contenders.  Despite the cool temperatures, the Lions stayed hot offensively, netting two goals and keeping the visitors off the scoreboard all game long.

Nikki Francis (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) scored the game's deciding goal off a perfectly placed corner kick from Lindsey Haldeman (Grantville, PA/Hershey Christian) in the 23rd minute.  The goal was Francis' team-leading fourth of the season.  Alli Trutt (Halifax, PA/Halifax) got into the scoring act less than two minutes later, putting her shot past Wildcat keeper Aubrey Campbell (Auburn, NY/Auburn) to give the Lions a 2-0 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Penn State Harrisburg's Janelle Hammond (New Cumberland, PA/Cedar Cliff) was forced to spend the entire game as the blue and white's last line of defense thanks to the team's injury epidemic that forced the Lion's other goalie, Tina Martino (Essington, PA/Interboro), to man the forward spot.  Despite the changes, both women played well.  Martino's aggressive play added to the home team's offensive dominance while Hammond worked her first shutout of the season.

The win improved Head Coach Mark Brown's team to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in NEAC play.  The victory proved valuable, as it vaulted the Lions ahead of SUNYIT in the NEAC standings and leaves them with a win percentage of .750; just .250 points behind undefeated and conference-leading Lancaster Bible.  Penn State Harrisburg has a chance to give the Chargers their first loss when they come to Middletown on Saturday, Oct. 8.
