Miller’s Two-Goal Outing Spoils Lancaster Bible’s Homecoming

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Penn State Harrisburg men's soccer team was slotted to be Lancaster Bible's homecoming opponent this year.  It ended up being an unwise decision on the Chargers' part as the Lions pounced from the start and never looked back on their way to an impressive 4-0 win on Saturday, Oct. 7.

Penn State Harrisburg's freshman goalkeeper Deven Gerhart  (Newmanstown, Pa. / Eastern Lebanon County) was a huge part of today's big win.  The game could have easily gone down differently had Gerhart not made three crucial goal-saving stops in the first half, including a full extension midair dive to stop a penalty kick that preserved the shutout.

Leading the charge offensively was Tommy Miller (Palmyra, Pa. / Palmyra).  The Palmyra native started the blue and white scoring drive with a successful penalty kick mid-way through the first half.  He refused to settle for just one goal and in the 32nd minute struck again with a screamer of a shot from just outside the 18-yard box.

The third goal of the day came from a nice left footed finish by Hakan Demircan (Wiesbaden, Germany / Wiesbaden American) with just 2:08 to go in the half to put the Lions up 3-0.  Both teams fought hard throughout the entire game and the second half showed a lot of hungry effort from both teams.  Mike Jones (Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin) would be the only player in the second half to get his fill as he scored a well-placed volley into the top left corner of the goal off a Penn State Harrisburg corner kick.

"Today's game was a very stern test and I thought the boys were up for it, no doubt," said Lions' Head Coach Seamus Donnelly.  "We kept a clean sheet and all our goals were very well worked.  It was a good team performance and another step forward."

The blue and white will be back on the pitch for a non-conference game when they host Juniata College on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m.
