Physical Contest in the NEAC Quarterfinals

November 10th, 2008

MIDDLETOWN, PA - With the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) quarterfinals at Penn State Harrisburg this weekend, the 5th seed Nittany Lions looked to use their home field advantage against the 4th seeded Fighting Tigers of SUNY Cobleskill.

Because the regular season match was rained out, it was very difficult for the coaching staff and players to estimate their competition. SUNY Cobleskill beat the NEAC´s 2nd best team, Keuka College, in the regular season but struggled with some lower seeded NEAC opponents. "We are looking to come out and set the tone for the game," stated Coach Mark Brown, "we will not under estimate Cobleskill."

The first half was a back and forth boxing match between the two physical teams. Possession was in favor of the Fighting Tigers, but the Nittany Lions defense did not stumble until late in the half when SUNY Cobleskill´s Aaron Gallusser scored his second goal of the season assisted by Mame Samb in the 43rd minute.

Second half proved to be much more physical than the first. The Fighting Tigers came out more aggressive but the Nittany Lions´ defense was up to the task, defending well and getting good counterattacks. Sensing the end of the game, the Lions became more aggressive on offense ripping nine shots in the half. Although they were able to get three times as many shots in the second half they failed to put one pass SUNY Cobleskill´s goal keeper, Travis Hall. In the 75th minute SUNY Cobleskill´s Emile Barnett scored to put the Fighting Tigers up by two. David Gardner iced the game with his goal in the 87th minute to put the Tigers the 3-0 victory.
