Lions Off to Strong Start

MIDDLETOWN, Pa.- Penn State Harrisburg's golf team finished off the early portion of its season by recording its best overall team finish of the fall.  The Lions placed second out of ten squads at the Muhlenberg Fall Classic at the Lehigh Country Club on Monday, Oct. 17.  The blue and white showed consistency across the board as five players finished within three strokes of each other's individual scores.

Freshmen C.J. Foust (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) and Jordin Stoltz (Manheim, PA/Manheim) were the low men, both finishing with an 83.  Senior Max Hrip (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) and sophomore Steve Foell (Pottstown, PA/Boyertown) weren't far behind as both golfers finished with identical scores of 85.  Ryan Foell (Pottstown, Boyertown) rounded out the Penn State Harrisburg scorecard with an 86.

Head Coach Brad Kane was very happy with his team's effort and noted that despite scores in the 80s, the Lions played the course well and fared better than top notch schools such as Muhlenberg, Delaware Valley, Alvernia and Lebanon Valley College.

"This was by far the hardest course we've played in years," he said.  "We had some high scores, but we did really well compared to a lot of other quality schools."

The runner-up finish was Penn State Harrisburg's second of the fall campaign.  The Lions finished second at the Gettysburg Invitational last month and bested more notable programs at that tournament, including the host school and York College.

The defending North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) champions are off to a strong start again this season.  Foust and Ryan Foell have both earned NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week honors in 2011 and if the Lions early season performance is any indication, they'll be more than up to the task of defending their conference crown when the season resumes in the spring of 2012.
