Ladies Swept On Final Day of Battlefield Classic

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg hit the court for the second-straight afternoon on Saturday, Sep. 1.  The women's volleyball team faced more strong competition on day two of Gettysburg College's Battlefield Classic.  Unfortunately for the blue and white, the Lions fell in straight sets in both contests for the second consecutive day.

The ladies faced Adrian College in their first outing and dropped the hard-fought match to the Bulldogs by a score of 25-10, 25-17 and 25-8.  Junior Chidere Igwe (West Orange, N.J. / West Orange) recorded a team-high three while Michelle Pellechia (Allentown, Pa. / Catasauqua) and Olivia Umoren (Quincy, Mass. / North Quincy) chipped in with two apiece.

Freshman Melissa Ganz (Weston, Fl. / Cypress Bay) led the way defensively with nine digs.  Sophomore Erin Goodyear (Boiling Springs, Pa. / Boiling Springs) dug out six balls while Katie Shek added five of her own.  The freshman also recorded three aces.  Junior setter Beth Findley (New Providence, Pa. / Solanco) added four assists.

The second match of the day saw the same end result for Penn State Harrisburg.  This time it was a strong Washington College squad that downed the blue and white 25-8, 25-14 and 25-10.

Igwe again led the Lions in kills with four.  Umoren, Monica Bishop (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg) and Jess Sinex (Oxford, Pa. / Oxford) pitched in with two apiece.  Findley again led the team in assists with six while Shek added four of her own.

Ganz and Bishop dug out six balls apiece.  Igwe and Findley also helped out defensively, each recording four digs.  Pellechia was responsible for the Lions only block of the contest.

It was a tough weekend for Penn State Harrisburg in terms of results.  Now the ladies will look to regroup and pick up their first win of the 2012 campaign.  The Lions will get their chance to do just that when they travel to Hood College on Thursday, Sep. 6.
