Lions Split Pair of Five-Set Matches

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - After a tough loss to Messiah, the Penn State Harrisburg Lady Lions looked for their first win of the season at the home tri-match facing Hood College and Immaculata University on Saturday.

Tackling the Hood College Blazers was the Lady Lions first task of the day. From the beginning of the match it was clear that the two teams would have to battle it out for the win.

In the end, Hood College prevailed with a 3-2 win (25-22, 21-25, 20-25, 25-15, 16-14). It was not for a lack of effort or skill that Penn State Harrisburg took the loss. Leading the Lady Lions was Amanda Duda (New Cumberland, PA/Westfield) with 12 kills, 4 assists and 17 digs. Alongside of Duda, Trisha Stauffer (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) recorded 15 digs and Jocelyn Mitchell (Middletown, PA/Heath) had 9 kills and 1 dig. The Lady Lions outscored the Blazers in total team blocks but were unable to match their 43 kills in the 2 hour long match.

The Lady Lions caught their breath while Hood College took the court for their second match of the day against the Immaculata University Mighty Macs. The Mighty Macs outscored the Blazers taking the win in another 5 set match (19-25, 25-19, 25-14, 22-25, 15-10).

In the final match of the afternoon the Penn State Harrisburg Lady Lions faced Immaculata. Hoping to catch the Mighty Macs worn-out after just finishing their 5 set match up, the Lady Lion started out strong winning the first match 25-20. It seemed inevitable that the third and final match would hit five sets to make for a nonstop day of volleyball. The Penn State Harrisburg pulled out the win 3-2 in 5 sets (25-20, 14-25, 13-25, 25-15, 15-13). Pacing the Lady Lions was sophomore Amanda Duda (New Cumberland, PA/Westfield) with 13 kills, 2 assists and 10 digs. Other impressive performances came from Trisha Stauffer (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) with 19 digs and Morgan Madden (Towanda, PA/Towanda) with 7 kills, 2 assists and 1 dig.

The Lady Lions look for their next win as they travel to Carlisle, PA to face Dickinson College on Wednesday September 16th at 7:00 PM.
