Women's Basketball's Season Ends In United East Semifinals

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The 2021-22 campaign came to an end for Penn State Harrisburg's women's basketball team with a 78-60 defeat at the hands of conference foe SUNY Morrisville  at Gallaudet University in the semifinal round of the United East Tournament on Friday night, Feb. 25.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After keeping things close for three-plus quarters, Penn State Harrisburg (16-9) ran out of gas in the closing minutes of a loss to SUNY Morrisville (18-7) on Friday night. With the win, Morrisville advances to the United East Championship Game against Gallaudet on Saturday afternoon.

Anna Mahan wrapped up her stellar career with a double-double, posting a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds. Jayla Galbreath was the only other Penn State Harrisburg player to reach double figures with 10 points, while Giahny Correa added nine points off the bench.

Trailing by as many as 15 points early in the fourth quarter, the Lions fought back and cut the deficit to a more-manageable six points, using a 11-2 run capped by a Correa layup to climb back into it with 4:03 remaining.

The Blue & White momentum was halted from there, however, and the Mustangs scored 15 of the game's next 17 points. The Lions also went cold from the field, failing to score another field goal the rest of the way. The combination proved too much for Penn State Harrisburg to overcome down the stretch.

The Lions trailed by six at halftime, fell behind by double digits in the third quarter, but battled back to draw within four late in the frame. It was a pattern that continued for much of the game, with the Blue & White erasing deficits to stay within striking distance but never able to get over the hump and take the lead.
