How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg Women's Basketball team's season came to a close, falling to second seeded Southern Virginia in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) tournament. Shanique Mattis, Laurel Amey, Kendis Butler, and Anna Mahan all reached double figures.

After getting off to a slow start, the Lions would get a spark from Anna Mahan. Mahan connected on a pair of three-pointers, tying the game at eight. The teams would trade baskets throughout the rest of the quarter, and despite a Shanique Mattis buzzer beating layup, Harrisburg trailed by five heading to the second quarter.

The Knights would open the second quarter on a 7-2 run to capture a ten point lead. The Lions would start to rally back when Mattis connected on a three-pointer. Later Briana Davis found a wide open Madison Hemler for an easy layup pulling the Lions within three points. The Blue & White would not be able to pull any closer, trailing 35-29 heading into the locker room.

Harrisburg continue to keep pace with the Knights throughout the third quarter. Mattis found an open Laurel Amey for a layup to pull back within four points. On the next possession, Kendis Butler drilled a three-pointer, making it a one-point game. Mattis would give the Lions their first lead of the game, knocking down another three-pointer. The teams would begin trading the lead back-and-forth with the Knights recapturing a 49-45 lead heading to the final quarter.

The Lions kept the pressure on the Knights, connecting on several timely three-pointers in the fourth quarter. Rachel Miller's three-pointer with 3:24 remaining in the game, allowed Harrisburg to close within three points. After a Knights free throw, Shanique Mattis would storm to the basket for a layup, making the score 61-59. The Knights would hit a few more clutch free throws to keep the lead, but Mattis would pull the Lions with a single point with a layup with 1:37 remaining in the game. The Lions would not be able to capture the lead, falling 69-62.

Inside the Numbers

- Shanique Mattis lead the Lions offense in her final career game, scoring 16 points. During the game Mattis also became schools single season leader in three-pointers made with 68

- Laurel Amey added 12 points making 5-6 shots from the field

- Kendis Butler also scored 12 points, making all five of her free throws

- Anna Mahan reached double figures, scoring 11 points

- Southern Virginia was led by Alexus Barnes who scored 18 points.

- Harrisburg connected on 7 three-pointers bringing their season total to 262, ranking them in the top ten nationally
