YORK, Pa. -- The battle for CAC women's basketball supremacy this season figures to be a wide-open one, as evidenced by the CAC coaches giving three different teams multiple first-place votes in the 2015-16 CAC Women's Basketball Preseason Coaches' Poll. Mary Washington was picked as the preseason favorite, receiving five first-place votes and 76 points.

Christopher Newport (3 first-place votes; 71 points) and Marymount (2 first-place votes; 60 points) also were given first-place votes from the conference coaches, landing second and third in the poll, respectively. York (59 points) and defending-champion Salisbury (54 points) rounded out the top five.

Wesley (38 points) was picked sixth, followed by St. Mary's (34 points), Penn State Harrisburg (23 points), Southern Virginia (20 points) and Frostburg State (15 points).

Salisbury put together a record-breaking season last winter, capturing its first CAC Championship since the 2001-02 season, advancing to the NCAA Elite 8 and posting a school-record 28 wins. The Sea Gulls lost several key pieces from last year's title team, including CAC Player of the Year and first-team All-America point guard Anna Hackett.

The season begins this weekend, while CAC play jumps into full swing in early December. The CAC Tournament will commence in late February, with the title game set for Saturday, Feb. 27.

Here is a brief look at each team entering the 2015-16 season:

CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT will feature a young roster with just three upperclassmen in 2015-16. Despite the youth, the Captains return three of their four leading scorers and rebounders from last season. A sophomore quartet of Jalynn PonzoSam PorterBailey Dufrene and Devon Byrd combined for 29.4 points and 18.2 rebounds per game as rookies last season, and all will be heavily relied on again this season. Another sophomore, Makenzie Fancher, will likely move into the starting point guard position in her second season after averaging nearly 19 minutes per game with 58 assists last season.

FROSTBURG STATE enters the 2015-16 season with plenty of momentum on its side following five wins in its final eight games of last season. Second-year head coach Carrie Saunders returns three players from a year ago and has a talented group of newcomers. Senior Courtney Young will provide veteran leadership to a young roster after averaging 5.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game as a junior. Sophomores Adjowa Pinkrah (5.5 ppg) andKache Fields (4.7 ppg) both saw plenty of action in their first seasons.

MARY WASHINGTON welcomes back six lettermen from a season ago, including all-conference center Brianne Comden, who averaged 13.2 PPG and 6.7 rebounds per game. Also back for the Eagles are forwards Sarah Listenbee and Taylor Barton. In the backcourt, the Eagles welcome back starting point guard Megan Green as well as sophomore Kendall Parker.

MARYMOUNT will turn to seniors Kievanna Lacey and Miranda Krott, junior Kiki Laux and sophomore Leah Hurst to lead a much deeper Saints' squad into the 2015-16 slate. Lacey and Hurst return this season after starting in every game last season, while also leading the team in points per game with 15.4 and 9.7, respectively. Krott will come back as a presence in the paint, leading the squad in rebounds (8.4 per game) and blocks (0.7 per game). Laux adds depth to the shooting end with her 8.7 points per game, while returning as the second-leading rebounder with 5.5 per game. Eight new faces join the Saints this season, giving head coach Ashlee Rogers different options at various positions.

PENN STATE HARRISBURG is coming into the season with high hopes and will look to improve on their 4-21 record from last year. The Lions are bringing back their seven top scorers from last year's campaign, including one of the CAC's best rebounders, senior forward Kiara Carter.  The Lions will also welcome a multitude of new talent which hopes to add depth to a quality returning core.

Fifth-year ST. MARY'S head coach Crystal Gibson returns her top two scorers in All-CAC selection, Nina Haller, and the reigning CAC Rookie of the Year,Kerri Kline, plus seven talented newcomers. This year's 15-person roster has enough experience and talent to handle a challenging schedule and move beyond the CAC Tournament's first round for the first time since the 1999-00 season.

SALISBURY enters the 2015-16 season after its most successful season in program history. The Sea Gulls defeated Mary Washington in a thrilling, double-overtime game to win the CAC Championship before making a run all the way to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Head coach Kelly Lewandowski was awarded several honors last season, including CAC Coach of the Year and WBCA Division III Regional Coach of the Year. Salisbury returns two seniors from the Elite Eight squad in forward Julia McLaughlin and guard Theano Alvanos. McLaughlin saw 24 starts last season, tallying 8.3 points per game along with six rebounds per contest, which led the team. Alvanos saw limited action last year, but was a key player when she was on the court, shooting over 33 percent from the field. Lauren Rothfeld returns for her junior campaign after making a big impact at guard last year. Rothfeld averaged 5.8 points per game and was second on the squad with two steals per game.

With one season in the CAC under her belt, head coach Heather Roberts looks to propel the SOUTHERN VIRGINIA program deeper into the conference this year. The Knights lost All-CAC second team member Crystal Cleveland due to a mission for the LDS Church but look forward to a few returning players and a young incoming class.

WESLEY will look to improve its record for the third straight season under head coach James Wearden. The squad won just three games in the 2012-13 campaign, improved to five wins in the 13-14 season, and last year posted double-digit wins for the first time since 2010-11 with an 11-14 mark. The squad returns all five starters, including CAC First-Teamer and leading scorer Brionna Johnson (16.8 ppg). The Wolverines could be a sleeper in this year's CAC standings.

YORK begins the season with a large roster full of talented returners and newcomers. Junior Sam Hruz is York's lone returning All-CAC player as she averaged 11.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. Starters Brianna BisciMorgan GolecSarah Shearer, and Katie Wagner also return to the Spartan lineup. Head coach Betsy Witman also welcomes back key returners Karli McFatridgeJulianne LambertMorgan Kuehneand Beth Wiseley. The Spartans also welcome in six freshman to the squad with two to three of them expected to get significant playing time during the year.
