Lady Lions Secure First Victory

MIDDLETOWN, PA - The Penn State Harrisburg women´s basketball team collected their first win on the season Tuesday, December 1st by defeating the Patriots of Valley Forge Christian College, 60-49, at the Capital Union Building.

 

The Lady Lions set the tone early, striking with a 9-0 run within the first four minutes of play capped off by a Dorothea Dixon (Middletown, PA/Middletown) free throw. Continuing in the first half the blue and white kept the Patriots at bay, stretching their lead to as much as 11 with 7:49 to go.

Valley Forge turned up the defense and finished out the half with a 9-4 run to bring themselves within five at halftime, 24-19.

Powered by their leading scorer, Amanda Reich, the visiting Patriots were able to get within two in the second half but the Lady Lions were determined to capture their first victory and poured on the offense led by freshman Nicola Zangari (Etters, PA/Red Land), scoring 12 of the last 26 Lady Lion points.

Freshman Daril Foose (Altoona, PA/Altoona) led the team with 17 points, collecting 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. Zangari finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and two steals. Freshman Stephanie Yetter (Thompsontown, PA/East Juniata) helped her Lady Lions with eight points, eight rebounds, three assists, two block and two steals in 35 minutes of play. Dixon led the team with five steals.

Penn State Harrisburg will look to ride their momentum into Saturday when they host SUNY Cobleskill December 5th. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 P.M. at the Capital Union Building.
