Defending Champs Open Conference Play With Sweep

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg began the 2013 portion of its conference schedule the same way it ended its 2012 league slate; by winning.  The two-time defending North Atlantic Conference (NAC) champions won their second-straight match on Friday, Mar. 29 when they made a clean 9-0 sweep of conference opponent Cazenovia.

It was all Blue & White in doubles play as the Lions surrendered just two games in three matches.  The team's top pair of Josh Cartmill (Carlisle, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) and Tyler Miller (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg) bested the Wildcats Alex McCarthy and Greg Ducasse 8-2 while Harrisburg's Zachry Warriner (Montrose, Pa. / Montrose) and Vincent Lepore III (Chepachet, R.I. / Ponaganset) took down Zach Fullen and Greg Rizzo 8-0 in the two spot.  Ben Leibig (Lebanon, Pa. / Lebanon) and Alex Koltun (Mount Gretna, Pa. / Cedar Crest) shut out Cazenovia's number three team of Mark McDermott and Sanjiu Varhese 8-0 to give the home team a nice cushion heading into singles action.

Cartmill, the 2012 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Player of the Year, picked up his first solo victory since rejoining the team for the spring season, a 6-1, 6-1 decision over McCarthy.  Evgeny Matigullin, the Lions' number two singles man, used a 6-4, 6-1 line to handle Ducasee and Miller, the reigning NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week, remained undefeated with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Fullen.  Leibig and Lepore swept Blass and Rizzo 6-0, 6-0 in the four and five slots.  Neither Harrisburg player lost a game on the day.

The Lions looked strong against Cazenovia and improved their overall record to 6-2 on the season.  The Blue & White will look to pick up its seventh victory when the team resumes play with Lebanon Valley on Wednesday, Apr. 3.  Penn State Harrisburg was leading when the match was suspended last week due to rain.
