How It Happened
Penn State Harrisburg erased a second-half deficit and scored twice in the final 22 minutes to secure a 2-1 victory over Penn College in the team's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener at NIttany Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 14.
With the score tied and less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Mason Jones gathered a ball from Haydyn Zagorski on the opposing side of midfield, drove through no less than five Wildcat defenders and flipped a beautiful attempt over unsuspecting Penn College goalkeeper Brendan Skwirut and into the back of the net in the 81st minute to give the Lions (4-3, 1-0 NEAC) a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
The Blue & White trailed as late as the 68th minute but Jared Brewer came up big when he converted the equalizer with 21:46 left to play. After Darion Ferreira sent a ball into the right side of the box, the defender made a pretty slide to get a touch on a shot that skirted past Skwirut and into the corner of the net, breathing new life into the home team for the stretch run.
Despite managing just one shot in the first half, the Wildcats (0-4, 0-1 NEAC) got on the board first when Josiah Potts crossed a ball from left of the Penn State Harrisburg goal that Daniel Jackson was able to strike into goal from just off center in the game's eighth minute.
