Harrisburg Tees Off Spring Nicely; Long Earns Share of First Place

LEBANON, Pa. – It had been nearly six months since Penn State Harrisburg last hit the links before the Lions teed-off the spring portion of their schedule at Lebanon Valley's Dutchmen Invitational on Monday, Apr. 1.  Apparently the layoff had no ill effects on the Blue & White.  Harrisburg finished fourth out of 17 programs, all five Lions played well enough to earn top-15 rankings and junior Jason Long (Rockhill Furnace, Pa. / Southern Huntigdon County) finished tied atop the individual leaderboard at LVC's spring outing held at Lebanon Country Club.

Long led the way for the Blue & White, posting a plus-four 76 total, good enough to earn him a share of the tournament's individual championship along with Elizabethtown's Ryan Laudeman.  Reigning North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Player of the Year Matt Plummer (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) was the team's second-highest finisher.  The sophomore's 83 was good enough to place him tied for 11th overall.

Harrisburg freshman Tyler Gentzel (Milroy, Pa. / Mifflin County) followed closely behind Plummer.  His 13-over 85 earned him a 13th place finish.  Junior Chris Murphy (Harrisburg, Pa. / Susquehanna Township) and freshman Matt Rowe (Lebanon, Pa. / Eastern Lebanon County) both posted scores of 86, ranking them tied for 14th overall.

"It was another cold, blustery day and I was really impressed with how our team continued to fight and scratch to the end," said Penn State Harrisburg Head Coach Michael Banzhoff about his squad's first 2013 performance.  "I look forward to bigger and better things as we move forward."

Millersville, an NCAA Division II school, won the team championship with a total of 313; 25 shots over par.  Penn State Harrisburg was the third-highest finishing Division III school with a 330 total; 42 shots over par.  Only Stevenson and Lebanon Valley ranked higher than the Blue & White.  The Lions next outing comes this Thursday, Apr. 4 when the men take part in Elizabethtown's Spring Invitational held at Hershey Country Club.
