Lions Battle Elements In Spring Opener

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's golf team hit the links for its first round of spring play on Monday, Mar. 26.  The Lions took part in the Swarthmore Invitational at the Rolling Green Country Club.  The blue and white played admirably on a cold afternoon marred by blustery winds, scoring a team total of 348 and finishing third out of five squads that included the likes of Drexel, Widener and the hosts from Swarthmore.

New to the squad this spring is freshman Matt Plummer (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley).  The CV grad was Penn State Harrisburg's low man with an 82.  Sophomore Ryan Foell (Pottstown, PA/Boyerton) finished just slightly behind his teammate with an 84.

Freshman CJ Foust (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) shot a 90 while sophomore Steve Foell (Pottstown, PA/Boyerton) and senior Max Hrip (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) both finished with a 92.

Freshman Jordin Stoltz (Manheim, PA/Manheim Township) (86) and juniors CJ Geis (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) (99) and Kevin Dalbey (Oberlin, PA/Hempfield) (107) all played as individuals.

Head Coach Brad Kane described the conditions as some of the worst wind his team has ever played in.  He added that the par 71 course is hard enough to master when the weather is ideal.  His thoughts were shared by opposing players and coaches as only four golfers in the field of 34 broke 80 on Monday afternoon.

The defending North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) champions will be back in action when they take part in Lebanon Valley's Spring Invitational at Lebanon Country Club on Monday, Apr. 2.
