LATHAM, N.Y. - A total of 102 Penn State Harrisburg student-athletes earned United East Scholar-Athlete recognition thanks to their success in the classroom during the 2022-23.

To earn the conference's academic distinction, a student-athlete competing in a conference-sponsored sport must achieve a combined grade point average (GPA) of 3.4 or higher for the fall and spring semesters, while remaining in good standing on his or her team.

Among the recipients is Jostens Trophy finalist Kendis Butler, United Soccer Coaches (USC) All-Region players Kylee Altland, Sydney Hemler, Sydney Mulka, and Luke Myers, National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region honoree Madelyn Lehigh, U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region runner Leah Gray, and all-region baseball players Josh Berzonski, Fisher Druck, Brendan Henn, Carlos Irizarry, and Matt Parks.

Three honorees in Butler (women's basketball), Hemler (women's soccer), and Hunter Merritt (baseball) were also named United East Senior Scholar-Athletes of the Year in their respective sports, while a dozen student-athletes in women's basketball's Butler, women's cross country's Gray, women's soccer's Hemler and Sarah Toche-Manley, softball's Lauren Hess and Lehigh, baseball's Merritt, men's soccer's Luke Myers, men's tennis' Derwin Merca and Nick Rohn, and women's tennis' Breanna DeSantis and Sarah Shaub earned College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District recognition. Baseball's Tom Westers also earned the United East Elite 14 Award this spring, while Mackenzie Sawdey was named the United East Softball Rookie of the Year.

Most impressively, nine Penn State Harrisburg student-athletes earned 4.00 GPAs during the 2022-23 campaign, including men's cross country's Angad Bhullar and Nick Spohn, Butler from women's basketball, women's soccer's Amy Patkos, Marc Rodgers from men's soccer, women's volleyball's Anna Ruff and Emmaline Stevens, Shaub from women's tennis, and baseball's Westers.

Women's tennis had the highest percentage of student-athletes earn the honor with seven of the team's eight players recognized (88 percent), while women's soccer's 16 honorees were the most of any women's team.
