Women's Volleyball Battles Back to Win Five-Set Thriller

CRESSON, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's women's volleyball team played the role of cardiac cats in another come-from-behind, five-set victory, this time on the road against Mt. Aloysius on Tuesday night, Sept. 13.

 

Anna Ruff had a massive night, finishing with a new career high in kills and total points, while Olivia Koicuba led the way on defense and on the serve. Alyssa Snyder also racked up 30-plus assists on the night.

 

After trailing 2-1 after three sets, the Lions (4-3) fought back from a deficit late in the fourth set before running away with the fifth to secure a 23-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-23, 15-8 victory over the hometown Mounties (1-6).

 

Penn State Harrisburg trailed 22-19 late in the fourth set but refused to go away, eventually scoring six of the game's final seven points and forcing a deciding set thanks to a couple of Tiniira Tubo service aces and a timely kill by Ruff. The Lions jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fifth after a pair of aces from Koicuba before reeling off five consecutive points to stretch the advantage to 12-4. Ruff finally closed things out with a match-clinching kill off a Katie Richardson assist.

 

NOTABLES

- Tuesday win was Penn State Harrisburg's third five-set victory of the season. 

- Ruff had a career night, racking up 21 total points thanks to 18 kills, four block assists, and a block solo.

- Olivia Koicuba was stellar, finishing with 20 digs and five service aces.

- Tiniira Tubo finished with 17.5 total points behind 12 kills, three aces, and three total blocks.

- Alyssa Snyder tallied 31 assists, three aces, and nine digs on the night.

- Tori Henderson added a dozen digs and six kills.

- Megan Morris chipped with five aces, while Emmaline Stevens contributed nine kills.

 

WHO'S NEXT?

The Lions return to the Capital Union Building to host Wilson on Thursday night. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
