ROSEMONT, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg's women's volleyball team picked up its third-straight victory by travelling to Rosemont and downing the Ravens in three straight sets on Tuesday night, Sep. 27. The Lions won each set by scores of 25-14, 25-13 and 25-15.
Freshman outside hitter Olivia Umoren (Quincy, Mass. / North Quincy) was the squad's offensive stud as she recorded a team-high seven kills on 13 attack attempts. Junior middle hitter Chidere Igwe (West Orange, N.J. / West Orange) was also strong as she added six kills of her own. Senior middle hitter Michelle Pellechia (Allentown, Pa. / Catasauqua) and sophomore outside hitter Monica Bishop (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg) chipped-in with four apiece.
On the defensive side of things it was freshman libero/defensive specialist Melissa Ganz (Weston, Fl. / Cypress Bay) who recorded the most digs with seven. Sophomore libero/defensive specialist Erin Goodyear (Boiling Springs, Pa. / Boiling Springs) dug out five balls of her own and junior setter Beth Findley (New Providence, Pa. / Solanco) pitched-in with four. Umoren and Igwe teamed up for the ladies lone block on the night.
The Lions 22 assists were divided over a nice spread of four players. Findley led the way with ten. Freshman setter Katie Shek (Old Bridge, N.J. / Old Bridge) assisted on six points while sophomore outside hitters Courtney Dimmig (Elizabethtown, Pa. / Elizabethtown) and Jess Sinex (Oxford, Pa. / Oxford) recorded four and two, respectively.
Penn State Harrisburg was also strong with the serve and picked up eight aces on the night. Findley recorded the most with three, Ganz racked up two and Pellechia, Goodyear and Shek added one ace each.
After starting the year 0-7, the blue and white has been strong as of late, winning six of its last nine matches. The Lions now sit at 6-10 on the year, just one victory short of the team's total from a year ago.
Penn State Harrisburg gets a bit of a rest as the ladies don't take part in a match for over a week. The Lions next outing comes on Friday, Oct. 5 when they participate in an all-important North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Crossover event. Friday's first match comes against league-foe Penn State Abington.
