Women's Tennis Leaves No Doubt In Win Over Berks

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg's women's tennis team hosted soon-to-be North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foe Penn State Berks at the Hoverter Tennis Complex on Wednesday afternoon, March 27, rolling the defending NEAC champions 8-1.

 

The hometown Lions (5-7) took an early 2-1 lead thanks to a pair of decisive victories in doubles play. Elyse Mellott and Maria Torre made it a clean 8-0 sweep over Deismy Jimenez and Nicole Meek in the No. 2 contest, while Abigail Clifford and Claire Hackenberg came away with an 8-3 win over Tessa Caltagirone and Anushka Rege in the third matchup.

 

The Blue & White kept rolling in singles action, as all six players emerged victorious in their respective outings. Sydney Nye went over Alyssa Miller 6-3, 6-2 in the top contest, Torre earned a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Lexi Vidal in the No. 2 pairing and Mellott picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot. Hackenberg bested Meek 6-4, 6-1 and Courtney Bennett was almost perfect in a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Katie Auman in the sixth match. Soorya Chitibabu clinched the final singles win by taking a competitive three-setter over Caltagirone by a score of 7-5, 1-6, 10-3.

 

With their first home outing of the spring now behind them, the Lions will look to defend their court once again when they host Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) foe at the Hoverter Tennis Complex on Thursday afternoon, March 28.
