Ladies Have Tough Go of Things Against Albright

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg had a rough time in the squad's fall finale at the Hoverter Tennis Complex on Wednesday evening, Oct. 9.  For the second time this season, the ladies were swept across the board, this time by Albright in the visitors' 9-0 victory.

In doubles competition, the Lions' top team of junior Stephanie Harnden (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey) and senior Theodora Avramidis (Vernon, N.J. / Vernon Township) were swept 8-0 by Albright's Victoria Foanio and Alyssa Sell.  The Blue & White's number two duo of senior Alejandra Portillo (Palmyra, Pa. / Palmyra Area) and freshman Laura Lin (Palmyra, Pa. / Susquehanna Township) didn't fare much better, falling to the opposing Lions' Brooke Ronney and Melissa Carberry 8-1.  Sophomore Amanda Herr (Manheim, Pa. / Manheim Central) and freshman Jasmine Brawner (Waldorf, Md. / Westlake), Penn State Harrisburg's number three pairing, were topped by Elizabeth Bengsston and Erin Sullivan 8-3.

The tough sledding continued in singles action as Harnden, the Blue & White's top solo player, was swept by Foanio 6-0, 6-0.  Avramidis fell to Ronney 6-1, 6-0 in the number two slot and Portillo was the Lions' second sweep victim when dropped her match to Sell 6-0, 6-0 in a matchup of the teams' number three singles players.  Herr gave Carberry a run for her money before falling 6-2, 6-3 and Brawner played hard in defeat as Bengsston held her off by a 6-4, 6-4 tally.  Sullivan completed the sweep for Albright by taking down Lin 6-1, 6-0.

The tough loss dropped Penn State Harrisburg to 1-4 on the season, ending the team's fall slate on a sour note.  The ladies will be on hiatus until the spring of 2014 when they host a familiar foe in former North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opponent Penn State Berks on Mar. 18.  The Blue & White will take part in its first Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) match two weeks later when the women host Salisbury on Mar. 30.
