Women's Basketball Advances to Volt Division Final

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's women's basketball team secured a spot United East Volt Division Final with a 59-44 win over St. Mary's (Md.) at the Capital Union Building on Monday night, Feb. 19. 

 

Giahny Correa led the team with 18 points, while Ciani Redd-Howard tallied a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Jayla Galbreath and Ali Lister finished with eight points each and Bailey Oehmig had a team-high 11 rebounds. 

 

Penn State Harrisburg (15-11, 11-1 United East) came out strong as they scored the first six straight points of the contest thanks to two layups from Lister and one from Redd-Howard. St. Mary's (14-12, 6-6 United East) managed to stop the Lions' roll halfway through the first quarter and brought the score within one. The second quarter proved to be a back-and-forth battle, but the home team kept the edge and went into halftime leading 25-18. 

 

The Blue & White went scoreless until the five minute mark in the third quarter, when Correa opened up a 13-0 run with a driving layup followed by two free ones from the charity stripe by Redd-Howard. At the start of the fourth quarter, the Lions were leading by 16 points and continued to extend the lead off of layups and jumpers from Correa and Galbreath halfway through. With about four and a half minutes remaining in the game, Penn State Harrisburg saw their largest lead of the night when they were up 56-34 and from then on the game was out of reach for the visiting Seahawks. 

 

NOTABLES 

- St. Mary's just barely won the rebound battle over Penn State Harrisburg 45-44. 

- Correa had a team-high 18 points while shooting just over 50 percent from the field.

- Redd-Howard tallied a double-double that included 10 points and 10 rebounds and swiped four steals. 

- Lister finished with eight points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. 

- Oehmig led the team with 11 rebounds and added seven points. 

- Galbreath had eight points, while Montana grabbed five rebounds. 

 

WHO'S NEXT? 

The Lions are set to host the United East Volt Division Final contest against Penn State Abington on Wednesday night, Feb. 21. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Capital Union Building.
