Gwynedd Mercy Outlasts Women's Basketball

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's women's basketball team fell to non-conference opponent Gwynedd Mercy 67-54 on Tuesday night, Nov. 21. 

 

Jenna Montana led the Lions with 15 points, while Giahny Correa also passed the double-digit threshold with 10 of her own. Mikayla Wright brought down a team-high eight rebounds and Bailey Oehmig was not far behind with seven. Ali Lister tallied five assists and three steals. 

 

With the Blue & White (1-5) trailing 29-24 going into the second half, Montana hit a much-needed 3-pointer to bring the game within two points. Although the Griffins (4-2) answered with four free throws and a three, Lister and Wright made back-to-back layups to keep the momentum going for the Lions. 

 

Entering the fourth quarter, the home team was up eight and extended its lead to 52-39 before Montana buried two consecutive shots from beyond the arc to help keep Penn State Harrisburg within striking distance. The squads traded points throughout the rest of the quarter, which included 3-pointers by Correa and Oehmig and a layup from Makayla Claggett. However, Gwynedd Mercy put the game out of reach with 1:30 left in the fourth quarter, as they scored five straight points to end the contest. 

 

NOTABLES 

- The Lions shot 26.4 percent from the field and 23.8 percent from beyond the arc. 

- The Griffins won the rebounding battle 54-35.  

- Montana led Penn State Harrisburg with 15 points and added four rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and a pair of steals. 

- Correa had 10 points and a pair of assists. 

- Wright tallied nine points, eight rebounds, and two assists, 

- Oehmig finished with seven points and seven rebounds. 

- Lister dished out a team-high five assists to go along with five rebounds and four points. 

- Jayla Galbreath added five points, two assists, and three steals.

The Lions are set to travel to King's (Pa.) for another non-conference game on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 26 at 1 p.m.
