Women's Basketball Rolls to Victory In Regular Season Finale

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's women's basketball team wrapped up the regular season with a convincing 92-47 victory over United East foe Penn State Berks on the Capital Union Building on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 18.

 

Giahny Correa netted a game-high 17 points, while Ciani Redd-Howard finished with 13 of her own. Macy Carroll added 11 points and Paige Kubalak was the fourth player to reach double figures with 10. 

 

The Senior Day starting five of Kendis Butler, Carroll, Jayla Galbreath, Sydney Hemler, and Kubalak led the Lions (16-9, 13-3 United East) to an early 12-0 lead thanks to a free throw from Hemler, a layup from Galbreath, and 3-balls from Carroll, Butler, and Kubalak. The visiting Lions (2-20, 2-14 United East) finally got on the board midway through the first quarter but Penn State Harrisburg closed out the frame on a 15-6 run to lead 27-8 after one.

 

Penn State Berks pulled to within 13 early in the second quarter but Penn State Harrisburg used a 17-6 run to put an end to any comeback attempt and stretch the advantage to a comfortable 49-25 margin heading into halftime.

 

Redd-Howard netted 11 of her 13 points in the third quarter off assists from Butler, Jenna Montana, and Carroll and the lead ballooned to more than 30 after three. It was more of the same in the final period and the advantage pushed past 40 for the first time when Correa converted an old-fashioned 3-point play with 5:44 left to play.

- The Lions shot 40.7 percent from the field and 30.4 percent from beyond the arc.

- Penn State Harrisburg recorded assists on 28 of the team's 33 made field goals.

- The Penn State Harrisburg bench outscored the Penn State Berks reserves 49-16. 

- Correa shot 7-of-8 from the field in netting a game-high 17 points.

- Butler recorded team-highs of eight rebounds, five assists, and five steals to go along with seven points.

- Hemler racked up eight points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

- Kubalak finished with 10 points, five rebounds, and three assists.

- Carroll connected on three triples en route to scoring 11 points. 

- Montana chipped in with five points, four assists, and three steals off the bench.

- Oivia Richardson added seven boards and five points in a reserve role.

- Bailey Oehmig finished with six points off the bench.

 

WHO'S NEXT?

The Lions earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming United East Championship Tournament. They'll take on No. 3 seed St. Mary's (Md.) in semifinal action at top-seeded Morrisville on Friday night, Feb. 24. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
