Balance Leads Women's Basketball to Fourth Straight Victory

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - In a game of stops and starts, Penn State Harrisburg's women's basketball team provided the final jolt in a 62-48 victory over United East rival Lancaster Bible at the Capital Union Building on Tuesday night, Jan. 17. 

 

Giany Correa, Jayla Galbreath, Kendis Butler, and Olivia Richardson scored a team-high 10 points apiece, while Butler and Bailey Oehmig nearly recorded double-doubles. Butler finished one rebound shy of the achieving the feat, while Oehmig accounted for eight points and 11 rebounds. 

 

To begin the fourth quarter, the Lions (8-6, 5-0 United East) used a pair of Galbreath free throws and an Oehmig layup to pull ahead 47-38. The Chargers (9-4, 4-1 United East) responded with a 5-0 run to make it a two-possession game with 6:24 remaining but Richardson and Correa answered back with layups to stretch the lead back to eight with less than five minutes left.

 

The visitors made one last push when Alaysha Iwais hit a 3-ball to pull the Chargers to within five with 2:48 left to play but following another Richardson layup, Lancaster Bible was forced to foul and Oehmig and Butler knocked down free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win. 

 

LBC jumped out to a 20-11 lead but Penn State Harrisburg changed the momentum with an 8-0 run to end the first quarter. The Lions ramped up their defense in the second and held the Chargers to just one field goal in the frame. After a tightly-contested third stanza, Penn State Harrisburg outscored the visitors by nine in the fourth and pulled away down the stretch. 

 

NOTABLES

- The Lions earned the double-digit win despite an off shooting night from 3-point range (16.0 percent).

- Penn State Harrisburg got to the foul line 11 more times than the Chargers and shot 66.7 percent from the stripe (12-of-18).

- The Lions won the rebounding battle 46-40 and scored a dozen second chance points.

- The home team forced 26 Lancaster Bible turnovers. 

- Butler finished one rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with 10 points, nine boards, and a game-high four steals.

- Oehmig also nearly recorded a double-double, scoring eight points and grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.

- Galbreath netted 10 points, corralled four boards, and dished-out two assists.

- Correa tallied 10 points and swiped three steals. 

- Richardson posted 10 points, five rebounds, and a pair of steals.

- Mikayla Wright added nine points and three boards off the bench.

- Jenna Montana chipped in with five rebounds, two assists, and a pair of steals in a reserve role.

- Sydney Hemler finished with four boards and three steals off the bench.
