Correa's Buzzer Beater Seals Victory at St. Mary's (Md.)

ST. MARY'S, Md. - Giahny Correa beat the buzzer with a game-winning layup to cap a thrilling 66-64 comeback victory for Penn State Harrisburg's women's basketball team over United East rival St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 14. 

 

Correa netted a game-high 21 points, including nine in the fourth quarter, while Jenna Montana buried five 3-pointers en route to 15 of her own. Jayla Galbreath was the team's third player to reach double figures with 11 points. 

 

After the hometown Seahawks (7-6, 3-2 United East) opened the fourth quarter on a 14-0 run to pull ahead 58-47 with 5:05 remaining, the Lions (7-6, 4-0 United East) mounted a furious comeback that saw Correa, Galbreath, and Olivia Richardson hit buckets before Kendis Butler sank the game-tying 3-pointer with 1:11 left to play. 

 

After St. Mary's (Md.) pulled ahead with 33 seconds left, the visitors pulled back even when Correa knocked down two free throws with 19 ticks remaining. Penn State Harrisburg locked down defensively and forced a turnover with four seconds left and after a timeout, Correa completed the come-from-behind victory with a driving layup from the right side with just 0.2 seconds left on the clock. 

 

Trailing 26-19 at the break, the Lions limited turnovers that plagued them in the first half, hit five 3-balls, and erupted for 28 points in the third quarter to lead 47-44 after three. Montana had a big third from beyond the arc, knocking down three of her game-high five triples in the frame. 

 

NOTABLES

- St. Mary's (Md.) shot 50 percent from the field, compared to 37.1 percent by the Lions but Penn State Harrisburg made up the difference by hitting eight more 3-pointers than the Seahawks. 

- The Lions shot 41.4 percent from beyond the arc.

- Penn State Harrisburg shot well from the foul line, going 8-for-9 (88.9 percent) on the day.

- Correa scored a game-high 21 points and went 5-for-5 from the charity stripe.

- Montana went 5-for-7 from 3-point range, tallying 15 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists.

- Galbreath shot 50 percent from downtown en route to netting 11 points. 

- Butler finished with seven points, three boards, and a pair of assists. 

- Richardson pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and added three steals.
