How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg got its 2019-2020 campaign underway, falling to Notre Dame (Md.) in the Blue & White's home opener on Monday, November 11.

The Lions got off to a slow start, falling in an early 8-0. Laurel Amey started the offense by stealing the ball and driving the length of the court for a layup. Later in the quarter, Amey would connect on the Lions first three-pointer of the season. Harrisburg found itself trailing 13-6 heading to the second quarter.

The Gators would continue to grow their advantage, using a full court press that seemed to bother the Lions offense attack. Notre Dame forced the Lions into 17 turnovers in the first half. Anna Mahan tried to get the Lions offense going, connecting a three-pointer as part of her 11 second quarter points. Macy Carroll and Kendis Butler each connected on a three before half, to pull the Lions back within eight points heading into the break.

After some halftime adjustments, the Lions began to find their stride in the third quarter. Abrianna Hamby opened scoring in the second half with a great post move that lead to an easy layup. Mahan connected on another three-pointer, part of her team high 22 points. The Lions struggled to slow the Gators offensive attack, as they seemed to find answer to each of the Lions baskets. Notre Dame would grow their lead to as many as 21-points late in third quarter. Mahan and Amey continued to keep Harrisburg in the game, as Mahan hit a three and Amey would storm to the basket for a layup to pull back within 16 points. The Gators responded and recaptured a 59-38 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

Harrisburg tried to rally in the fourth quarter, Amey connected on another three-pointer early in the quarter. The Lions traded baskets with the Gators, but could not cut into the lead. Butler connected on a pair of three's to pull within 17 points, but they could get no closer, falling 78-61.

Inside the Numbers

- Anna Mahan posted a 20-20 game, with 22 points and 20 rebounds

- Laurel Amey scored 18 points and added 5 rebounds

- The Gators Ariana Alleyne scored a game high 24 points

- Kendis Butler connect three times from behind the arc, totaling 10 points

- Notre Dame won the battle on the glass, outrebounding the Lions 56-34

The Lions will travel to take on Swarthmore College on Saturday, November 16 at 1:00 p.m.
