How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg fell to Mary Washington 77-56 in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) action on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 12. The Lions offense was led by Anna Mahan who scored 19 points, including five 3-pointers.

Both teams would trade baskets in a fast-paced opening quarter that saw the Blue & White connect four times from behind the arc. Briana Davis would connect on a pair of those 3-balls, with each one giving Harrisburg back the lead. The Eagles would counter the Lions perimeter attack with a strong inside game, allowing them to take a 21-16 lead heading to the second quarter.

Trailing by nine midway through the second quarter, Shanique Mattis and Kendis Butler both connected from behind the arc. The Eagles answered by going on a 9-0 run to take a commanding 12-point lead. The Lions would regain some momentum heading into halftime with Mahan connecting on a 3-pointer and Mattis drawing a foul and converting two free throws with less than two seconds remaining in the half.

Harrisburg would battle back from their nine-point defect behind a 3-point explosion from Mahan. She would connect on four second half triples, including three in the third quarter. The Lions would close within two points midway through the third quarter but the Eagles responded with a 9-3 run to close the quarter.

The Lions would not quit, however, continuing to battle into the final quarter. Mattis would connect on a trey and on the next possession find Madison Hemler for an easy layup to close to within four points. The Eagles attack would prove to be too much for the Blue & White down the stretch, as Mary Washington would pull away for the 77-56 victory.

Inside the Numbers

- Anna Mahan led the Lions offense with 19 points on 5-of-6 shooting from behind the arc

- Shanique Mattis reach double figures again, scoring 14 points

- The Lions aggressive defense came away with 13 steals

- Mary Washington was led by Emily Thompson who scored 18 points

- Harrisburg has now made 161 3-pointers this season, ranking them seventh in the nation

The Lions will travel to face Frostburg State in CAC action on Wednesday January 16 at 6 p.m.
