Christopher Newport Outlasts the Lions

Middletown, Pa.- Wednesday January 6th, tonight the Penn State Harrisburg women's basketball team hosted Christopher Newport. Going into the game, the Captains were in fifth place in the conference with Harrisburg behind in sixth. The women put up a solid effort in the first half but the visitors pulled away in the second half. The Captains went on to win 75-48.

The first quarter of the game was very defensive for both sides. Harrisburg was was only able to score four points. Sophomore Janel Brown (Gaithersburg, Md. / Magruder) started the second quarter off quick for Harrisburg with a three pointer to bring the home team only five points behind the Captains. Teammate Jasmine Yanich (Harrisburg, Pa. / Susquehanna Township) followed in Brown's footsteps with her first jumper of the day. Only a few seconds later, Brittany Ulrich (Lebanon, Pa. / Lebanon) came up big for Harrisburg with a layup. Harrisburg trailed Christopher Newport 21-16, going into halftime. 

The women started the second half out with a strong sense of urgency. Christopher Newport began to pull away as the third quarter progressed. Although the women trailed for the remainder of the game, Penn State Harrisburg never gave up and continued to put up a fight to the very end. Freshman Rachel Miller (Lebanon, Pa. / Cedar Crest) led for the Lions with 11 points and two rebounds. Kiara Carter (Bronx, N.Y. / Milton Hershey) had a strong performance defensively with ten rebounds. 

Up next on the schedule for Penn State Harrisburg is an away game on Saturday January 9th. The women will travel to Southern Virginia University for a 1 pm start.
