Week-Long Hiatus Cannot Keep Harrisburg From Defeating LVC

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – It took longer than anyone would've liked but Penn State Harrisburg finally bested Lebanon Valley 5-4 on Wednesday, Apr. 4.  The Lions led the visitors 2-1 before rain forced a stoppage in the teams' match on Tuesday, Mar. 26.  More than one week later, the Blue & White retained its advantage and won a hard-fought battle over the Dutchmen by the slimmest of margins.

Harrisburg went two for three in doubles play.  The Lions' number two team of junior Vincent Lepore III (Chepachet, R.I. / Ponaganset) and sophomore Zachry Warriner (Montrose, Pa. / Montrose) won a crucial contest over LVC's Ethan Grodzinski and Ryan Weitzel.  Lepore and Warriner used a 7-2 tiebreak to earn the 9-8 victory and have yet to lose as a tandem this season.  In the three slot, Harrisburg's Ben Leibig (Lebanon, Pa. / Lebanon) and Alex Koltun (Mount Gretna, Pa. / Cedar Crest) defeated the Dutchmen's pair of Sam Calabria and Dillon Streifeneder 8-3 to give the Blue & White a 2-1 lead heading into singles action.

The number one and two battles went to the visitors but the 3-5 spots proved to be the difference.  Penn State Harrisburg junior Tyler Miller (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg) won the battle of the threes when Lebanon Valley's Andrew Wilson fell behind 6-2 and then retired.  Leibing knocked off the Dutchmen's Jordan Shankroff 7-5, 6-1 in the four hole and Lepore handled Calabria 6-3, 6-2 in the number five position.  These individual victories sealed the team win and gained some revenge for the Lions after falling to LVC a year ago.

The win gives the two-time defending North Atlantic Conference (NAC) champions seven victories on the year (7-2).  Penn State Harrisburg will look to keep things rolling when they host Rutgers-Camden on Satruday, Apr. 6.
