Defending Champs Stay Perfect Through Fall

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg's men's tennis team seems to have picked up where it left off last season.  The 2010-2011 campaign ended with a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) championship.  If things continue in the spring the way they have for the Lions so far this fall, don't be surprised if they make it two in a row.

The men finished the early portion of their season by defeating Goucher 6-1 on Oct. 14.  The victory capped off an undefeated fall slate, something not even last year's championship squad was able to accomplish.  Penn State Harrisburg's players have shown the ability to win in a variety of ways.  There was the pair of 7-2 wins over Albright and Juniata to begin the year, followed by two consecutive 5-4 squeakers over Susquehanna and Alvernia.  If any team plans on winning a title, it has to learn to win no matter what the circumstances.  The Lions proved early that blowout or nail biter, they could find a way to win.

Penn State Harrisburg junior Nate Tulchinsky (Hershey, PA/Hershey) went 3-2 in his spot as the team's number one singles player and Josh Cartmill (Carlisle, PA/Cumberland Valley) finished 2-2 in the number two slot.  Jerred Hall (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) was undefeated (4-0) as the number three man, as was Evengy Matigullin (New Bloomfield, PA/Susquenita) (3-0) at a variety of positions up and down the lineup.  Tyler Loy (Annville, PA/Annville Cleona) was also solid, finishing the first half at 3-1.

The men were also strong in doubles' play.  Tulchinsky and Hall paired up four times and finished at the .500 mark.  Cartmill and Loy went 3-1 in the number two doubles' spot and the team of Vishnu Gopalakrishnan (Ashburn, VA/Briar Woods) and Zachry Warriner (Montrose, PA/Montrose) finished the fall campaign 5-0.

The Lions quest for a second straight title picks back up when they host Immaculata on March 17, 2012.
