CAC SAAC Leaders Spend Afternoon Bowling With Special Olympics Athletes

The Capital Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee members came together in Fredericksburg, Va. in late September for an afternoon of fun with local Special Olympics Athletes, followed by the organization’s bi-annual meeting.

Senior's Edgar Makimoto (Sao Paulo / Selinsgrove) and Jordan Fuhrman (Lancaster, Pa. / Hempfield High Schoo) represented Penn State Harrisburg during the event. Both Makimoto and Fuhrman have been key runners for the cross country team as well as being leaders in and around SAAC over their time here at Penn State Harrisburg.

SAAC student leaders and their staff advisors spent the afternoon bowling with Special Olympics Athletes from the Fredericksburg area. CAC student-athletes took full advantage of the opportunity to interact and spend time with the Special Olympics athletes, making for a fun-filled few hours of camaraderie and competition on the lanes.

Following the Special Olympics event, CAC and SAAC leaders met for their bi-annual meeting to share ideas on institutional SAAC initiatives, discuss the upcoming legislation for the 2016 NCAA Convention, share concepts for future charitable events and ways to improve the student-athlete experience on their respective campuses.

The mission of the Capital Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is to enhance the overall student-athlete experience.  The representatives who serve on this committee serve as a communication link between the conference SAAC, their institutional SAAC, and their respective sports team(s).  The representatives have an understanding of the NCAA legislation and issues that are present in Division III athletics.  These student-athletes serve as a representative of every student-athlete at their institution, and their charge is to have every student-athletes' voice heard on the conference level. The student-athletes who serve on this committee are role models to all, and look to foster & promote good sportsmanship while maintaining the tenants of the Division III philosophy.
