Cross Country Hosts Bud Smitley Invitational

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's men's and women's cross country programs hosted the Bud Smitley Invitational on a wet and windy Saturday morning, Sept. 23. The men's team won the five-team event, while the women's squad finished fourth. 

 

On the men's side, Jon Carnesi and Angel Patino led the way, with each runner earning top-10 finishes. Carnesi finished the 5K race in 17:43 to come home fourth out of 29 total runners, while Patino's 17:58.8 was good enough to secure seventh place.

 

Mohammed Sakayl crossed the line in 12th, while Darryl Osei came home 15th. Caleb Mendolia and Zakareya Aidel went back-to-back in 18th and 19th, while Nick Spohn rounded out the team's men's runners in 27th place. 

 

Sarah Gibbons impressed on the women's side, earning a third-place finish out of 27 total competitors thanks to an effort of 22:48.6. Katrin Cavanaugh secured a 20th-place finish, while Alexus Brown, Alyssa Snyder, and Leah Gray completed the team's scoring contingency in 24th, 25th, and 26th, respectively.

 

After the event, the program recognized its eight track & field and cross country seniors in Comlan Greg Acoliste, Angad Bhullar, Brown, Frederick Riedel, Sakayl, Spohn, J. William Tyson, and Emily Weber.

 

The Lions return to action at the Penn State Abington Invitational on Saturday morning, Sept. 30.
