Lady Lions Split Opening Day

North Myrtle Beach, SC.- The Penn State Harrisburg softball team traveled to South Carolina for their spring break trip. The women started off their week today with a loss to Eastern, 5-3, and a win against Rhode Island College, 7-6.

In game one, the Lady Lions pulled ahead in the first inning with a double from Erelle Sowers (Harleysville, Pa. / Souderton Area) sending Rieley Loch (Madison Township, Pa. / North Pocono) to home plate. Just a few minutes later, Sowers scored off of a single from Jackie Furch (Hallstead, Pa. / Blue Ridge). Eastern battled back over the next two innings, scoring all of their runs in only two innings. Harrisburg was able to score once more thanks to a grounded ball to second base from Jenna Rupakus (New Milford, Pa. / Blue Ridge).

In Harrisburg's second game of the day, the Lady Lions came out hot in the first inning with six of their seven runs. Furch doubled at bat first with two RBI's. Emily Parmer (Willow Street, Pa. / Solanco) and Kristen Evans (Harrisburg, Pa. / Dauphin County Technical)  also doubled in the first with a combined total of three runs in to home plate. Rhode Island came out strong in the second inning with four runs due to two errors by the Lions, a single, and a wild pitch.  Sowers gave up only one hit in four innings while striking out four batters. Rhode Island made one last effort at the top of the third to overcome Harrisburg's early lead. The Lions stood strong and finished the game with their first win of the season.
