Yon Named CAC Male Athlete of the Year

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Penn State Harrisburg men's track & field athlete Cameron Yon has been named the 2018-19 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Male Athlete of the Year, as voted on by the conference's athletic directors.

The CAC Male Athlete of the Year Award is presented to one men's student-athlete from the conference who garnered superior athletic recognition and achievement, either individually or in conjunction with his team.

Yon became the first student-athlete in school history to win a national championship when he secured gold in the discus throw at the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships last month. The senior was the first athlete in program history to qualify for an NCAA Championship event as a freshman in 2016. The Patuxent River, Md. native was also the first Penn State Harrisburg athlete to earn all-America honors, winning bronze in the event during his first trip to the national meet. He wrapped up his illustrious career with three U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America honors.

He was named the USTFCCCA Mideast Regional Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year and the CAC Outdoor Men's Co-Athlete of the Year along with teammate Jalil Clayton after setting a new conference championship and facility record when he won gold in the discus throw with a toss of 54.45 meters. His longest throw of 56.27 meters this spring was tops in the nation and stands as a CAC record. Yon added an ECAC Championship in the event and was twice named the CAC Field Athlete of the Week this spring. He was named a USTFCCCA All-Region performer in both the discus throw and hammer throw earlier this season.

His indoor campaign included USTFCCCA Indoor All-Region recognition in the weight throw and he won bronze in both the shot put and weight throw at the CAC Indoor Championships.
