Men's Hoops' Streak Ends In Heartbreaking Fashion at St. Mary's

Brandon Coleman looks to make a pass to a teammate during a game against Muhlenberg in 2021.

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Penn State Harrisburg's men's basketball team's historic win streak came to an end in heartbreaking fashion in a last-second 74-73 road loss to United East foe St. Mary's (Md.) on Tuesday night, Feb. 1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Uncharacteristic turnovers in the final seconds cost Penn State Harrisburg (16-2, 9-1 United East) the game and the top spot in the United East standings on Tuesday night, as the Lions watched an eight-point lead evaporate in the final minute amid a combination of defensive pressure and an offensive flurry from St. Mary's (10-5, 9-0 United East).

Donyae Baylor-Carroll led the way with a game-high 29 points and seven rebounds, while Brandon Coleman netted 23 of his own and pulled down eight boards. Nate Curry was the third Penn State Harrisburg player to reach double digits with 11 points and eight rebounds.

With the score tied at 60 with less than five minutes to play, Baylor-Carroll buried back-to-back 3-balls to kick off a 12-4 run that included a Dylan Daniels dunk, a pair of Curry free throws, and a layup by Baylor-Carroll off a feed from Coleman with 1:50 remaining.

In the final minute, however, the Lions turned the ball over three times, with each miscue leading to points for the Seahawks on the other end. Seth Jones hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to five before a Daryn Alexander converted a pair of free throws following a Penn State Harrisburg foul with 34 seconds left. After Coleman went 1-for-2 from the charity stripe, Alexander connected on another triple to cut the lead to one. The home team forced another turnover with less than 15 seconds left and Isaiah Eggleston played hero when he hit a driving layup with 2.8 seconds remaining to seal the improbable victory for St. Mary's.
