How It Happened

Behind the most sensational offensive performance in program history; a 45-point outburst from Donyae Baylor-Carroll, Penn State Harrisburg knocked off No. 6 Johns Hopkins 104-96 in double overtime at Goldfarb Gymnasium in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night, March 6.

Baylor-Carroll set a new single-game program record with his point total and added six assists, five rebounds and three steals. Nate Curry finished with 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting, Pedro Rodriguez had 17 points and Dylan Daniels recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Thanks to the victory, the Lions (21-7) will now face No. 13 Yeshiva (28-1) at Goldfarb Gymnasium at 8:45 p.m. on Saturday night, March 7 in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.

The nail-biting final minutes saw JHU's Carson James beat the buzzer with a contested 3-pointer that tied the game at 83-83 as the time expired in the first overtime period but Baylor-Carroll opened the second extra session with a 3-ball of his own before converting a pair of free throws to extend the advantage to five with 3:17 left.

James went 1-for-2 from the line on the Blue Jays' next possession but Baylor-Carroll was fouled attempting a jumper from beyond the arc and buried all three free throws to make it 91-84. Rodriguez finished off a feed from Baylor-Carrol with a layupl on the next possession, Baylor-Carroll hit two more foul shots and Zegary Scott III added a layup in transition to extend the lead to eight with 52 seconds left.

Tom Quarry hit a 3-ball that cut the Blue Jays' deficit to six with 16 ticks remaining but Curry capped the game's scoring with a fastbreak layup on the other end to seal the biggest victory in program history and give the Blue & White their first taste of success in the big dance.

The Lions trailed 73-70 in the final minute of regulation before Baylor-Carroll converted a trio of clutch free throws with 37 seconds left to tie things up and force overtime. Penn State Harrisburg erased a two-point deficit in OT and grabbed an 83-80 lead when Baylor-Carroll hit a step-back 3-pointer with five seconds left but James forced another extra session with his buzzer beater on the other end.

The visitors led by as many as 10 points early in the second half following a Daniels' 3-pointer at the 19:16 mark but Johns Hopkins (24-4) methodically cut into the deficit before reclaiming the lead at 70-62 thanks to a 15-0 run over the span of nearly five minutes that culminated with a James jumper with 5:31 remaining.

Curry ended the drought with a jump shot on the other end, Baylor-Carroll made it a one-possession game with a 3-ball and eventually converted an old-fashioned 3-point play to draw the Blue & White even with the home team with 1:50 to go.

The Lions led 40-33 at the break thanks to a 13-3 spurt to end the first half that included a Daniels dunk, four points from Curry, a Clinton Asalu layup in traffic and five points from Baylor-Carroll.

Inside the Numbers

- The Blue & White shot 53.8 percent from the field and 46.9 percent from 3-point range.

- JHU shot 43 percent from the floor and 34 percent from beyond the arc.

- The Blue Jays won the rebounding battle 41-36.

- The Lions were 19-of-24 from the foul line, while Johns Hopkins shot 12-of-18 from the charity stripe.

- Donyae Baylor-Carroll set a single-game program record with 45 points scored, including 18 in the overtime periods. He knocked down nine 3-pointers and finished 12-of-13 from the foul line, while adding six assists, five rebounds and three steals.

- Nate Curry netted 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting and pulled down five boards.

- Pedro Rodriguez finished with 17 points off the bench to go along with three assists and three rebounds.

- Dylan Daniels recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards. He also tallied four blocks.

- Zegary Scott III dished out 10 assists and scored five points.

- Clinton Asalu had four points and four rebounds off the bench.

- Tom Quarry led the way for JHU with 31 points, while Ethan Bartlett recorded a 24-point, 12-reobound double-double.

- The victory over the Blue Jays was Penn State Harrisburg's first over a nationally-ranked opponent since a win over Christopher Newport in 2014.

The Lions advance to take on No. 13 Yeshiva in NCAA Tournament Second-Round action on Saturday night, March 7. Tip-off is tentatively scheduled for 8:45 p.m. at Johns Hopkins' Goldfarb Gymnasium.
