A Penn State Showdown

MIDDLETOWN, PA - The Penn State Harrisburg men´s basketball team ended their four game losing streak with an exciting overtime victory over the visiting Nittany Lions of Penn State York. A game were freshmanKenton Alston (Steelton Highspire/Steelton, PA) and junior Cole McGuire (Susquenita/Duncannon, PA)nearly achieved a student-athlete´s dream, a triple-double.

Alston led his team with 22 points, ten of which came in the overtime period, a team-high 15 rebounds and a career-high eight blocks. With McGuire racking in 20 points, a career-high nine assists and a career-high eight rebounds to help the blue and white with their overtime victory.

Trailing 60-53 with 6:26 remaining in regulation, Penn State York´s Nico Karanicolas fouled sophomore Shane Woodman (Donegal/Mt. Joy, PA) in the act of shooting a three-pointer. Co-captain Woodman hit all three free throws to bring the blue and white within four.

Standing in and taking the charge, freshman Rhett Sheibley (Northern/Dillsburg, PA), forced the turnover to give possession back to Harrisburg. Next possession Sheibley hit a huge three-pointer to bring the Lions within one.

Penn State York would not lie down and take it easy regaining momentum and the lead back up to five. Momentum in full swing, Harrisburg took it back with a jump shot by freshman Brian Barry (Annville-Cleona/Annville, PA) and another three-pointer by Sheibley to tie the game.

Each team would grab the lead with both sides hitting key free throws. With the game tied at 72-72 and :11 remaining in the second half, Barry dished it off to Alston for the layup and the win, but the ball goes in and out of the basket and ends the half in a tie.

In overtime it was all Alston scoring 10 of the team´s 17 points and coming up with a huge block with 2:48 remaining to stop York from regaining momentum. At this point Harrisburg went on an 8-3 run to finish out the overtime period.

Woodman finished with 16 points, shooting 5-of-10 from the field, 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and 3-of-3 from the line. Barry knocked in 12 points with nine rebounds. Freshman Joey Fried (Hershey/Hershey, PA) helped with eight points, six boards and three blocks. Sheibley finished the game with nine points.

Penn State York had two players register double doubles led by Eric Hudak´s 18 points and 11 rebounds. Cody Correll totaled 15 points and 16 rebounds while Karanicolas lead his team with 22 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals.

The blue and white return to action on Sunday afternoon when they host D´Youville College. Tip time at Capital Union Building is set for 3:00 P.M.
