Baseball Tops Berks Twice to Stay Unbeaten In Conference Play

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg's baseball team extended its recent win streak to 11 straight and remained unbeaten in United East play thanks to a convincing doubleheader sweep of conference foe Penn State Berks on Friday afternoon, March 29. Penn State Harrisburg shutout the visiting Lions 12-0 in the opener before rolling to a 12-1 victory in the second contest.

 

GAME 1

Penn State Harrisburg (14-5, 4-0 United East) broke through in the third inning and never looked back in the team's game-one victory over Penn State Berks (4-15-1, 2-4-1 United East) on Saturday afternoon.

 

Drew Sassaman turned in an historic performance that saw him match the single-game program-record with five hits, beginning with an RBI double to right field that plated Lucas Floyd. Brendan Henn followed it up with an RBI single up the middle that scored Coy Schwanger and Sassaman to make it 3-0 after three. Floyd tacked on another run thanks to a solo home run in the fourth and the hometown Lions put things out of reach with six runs on four hits and four walks in the bottom of the fifth.

 

Penn State Harrisburg capped the scoring with two more runs in the sixth thanks to back-to-back RBI singles in bottom half of the frame before reliever Roberto Barron closed out his complete-game victory with three straight strikeouts in the top of the seventh.  

 

GAME 2

Penn State Harrisburg (15-5, 5-0 United East) completed the doubleheader sweep of conference foe Penn State Berks (4-16-1, 2-5-1 United East) with a 12-1 victory in Saturday's nightcap.

 

The hometown Lions scored early and often, beginning with a three spot in the bottom of the first that was keyed by three consecutive RBI singles from Carlos Irizarry, Dallas Hite, and Tim Haftl. They added two more in the second thanks to Kevin Lehner's double that drove in Coy Schwanger and Drew Sassaman before pushing the lead to 7-0 in the third when Schwanger hit a two-run home run.

 

Penn State Harrisburg put up its final crooked number of the day with a five-running bottom of the fifth, using four hits, including two doubles, and a pair of walks to blow the game open.

 

Danny Eden threw five scoreless frames to begin the contest before giving way to relievers Sam Thompson and Dylan Sattazahn to close out the game.
