Baseball Rallies to Clinch Regular Season Conference Title

JENKINTOWN, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg baseball split a wild North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader with Penn State Abington at Alverthorpe Park on Sunday afternoon, May 2. After falling 3-2 in extra innings in game one, the Lions put together a furious comeback in the final inning of the second outing to claim a 15-11 victory, secure the conference's regular season championship, and earn home field advantage in the upcoming NEAC Tournament.

GAME 1

Errors and unearned runs doomed Penn State Harrisburg in the team's 3-2, nine-inning loss to Penn State Abington in the first game of Sunday's conference doubleheader. Zach Gettys dazzled on the mound, throwing seven innings and allowing just one earned run, while Matt Isaac and Chase Smith each hit solo home runs.

Isaac hit his homer in the top of the second and Smith followed it up with one of his own in the top of the third to extend the visitors' early lead.

A defensive miscue hurt Penn State Harrisburg in the bottom of the fifth, however, as an error allowed the home team to score its first run and cut the deficit in half. It proved costly when Penn State Abington scored its only earned run of the game in the bottom of the seventh, tying things up and pushing the contest to extra innings.

In the bottom of the ninth, Penn State Harrisburg's fourth error of the contest allowed the home team to plate the game-winning run and steal a victory in the opener.

GAME 2

Down to its last out in the top of the seventh inning, Penn State Harrisburg refused to go away, using a grand slam and back-to-back home runs to pull ahead and complete the 15-11 come-from-behind victory over Penn State Abington in Sunday's nightcap.

Trailing 11-8 entering the seventh, Tyler Aug got things started when he was hit by a pitch with one away. Dallas Hite followed it up with a single before Chase Smith walked to load the bases. Bret Williams cut the deficit to two with a sacrifice fly and Matt Parks worked a walk to load them back up for Matt Isaac. The freshman didn't miss, hitting a go-ahead grand slam before Ryan McSorley followed him up with a solo shot to push the Lions lead to three. After a couple more walks and another hit by pitch, Hite, drove in another run with a bases-load walk.

With the momentum squarely in the corner of the visitors, Kieran Kearns struck out a pair of Penn State Abington hitters in the bottom of the seventh and got Ryan McCarty to fly out to end the game, seal the victory, and clinch the regular season conference championship for Penn State Harrisburg.
