How It Happened

Behind a complete-game gem from starting pitcher Brandon Riggs, Penn State Harrisburg defeated N.C. Wesleyan 6-0 on Sunday afternoon, March 8.

Riggs was outstanding, allowing just four hits and one walk in nine innings of work to go along with six strikeouts. At the plate, Bret Williams, Travis Van Houten, Zachary Koroneos and Ben Closson all had multi-hit outings.

Closson got the scoring started with an RBI single that plated Van Houten in the top of the second before Van Houten got into the act thanks to a double that brought home Ryan McSorley and Bret Williams in the top of the fifth.

The Lions (3-3) tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the ninth thanks to RBI doubles from Williams and Van Houten, as well a wild pitch during the frame. A pair of Battling Bishops reached base in the bottom of the ninth but Riggs preserved the shutout by getting the final two batters to fly out to Chase Smith in center field.
