Baseball Earns At-Large Bid to NCAA Division III Championship Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS – For just the second time in program history, Penn State Harrisburg has qualified for the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship Tournament after earning an at-large bid, as revealed by the tournament selection committee on Monday afternoon, May 13.

 

The Lions (32-13-1) earned the No. 2 seed in the four-team region hosted by No. 18 SUNY Cortland (31-11-1) and will face off against the New England Small Conference Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Champions from Tufts (29-9) in their first matchup on Friday, May 17. The game between the Blue & White and the Jumbos features a pair of squads receiving votes in the latest NCBWA/D3baseball.com Top 25 Poll.

 

Penn State Harrisburg, the region's second seed, joins top-seeded Cortland, the No. 3 seed in Tufts and fourth-seeded Alvernia for competition on the tournament's opening weekend. All games will take place at SUNY Cortland's Robert H. Wallace Field. Game time for the Lions first contest is set for 1:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

 

 

The NCAA Division III Championship Tournament will be contested with four teams will competing at 13 regional sites and two teams competing at three regional sites from May 17-19. The four-team regionals will use a double-elimination format and the two-team regionals will play a best-of-five series. Penn State Harrisburg was one of 18 teams to earn an at-large bid, while 40 conference champions secured automatic qualifiers.

 

Winners of the 16 regional tournaments will qualify for eight best-of-three series at the super regionals, on May 24-25. The eight super regional winners will then qualify for the pool play double-elimination championship at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, from May 31-June 4/5.
